Miss Malawi Controversy: Thandi Chisi Misses Miss World 2026

Thandi Chisi was crowned Miss Malawi in December 2025 in Lilongwe, succeeding Jescar Mponda. However, when Miss World 2026 commenced in Vietnam, Ireen Navicha, the first runner-up, represented Malawi instead of Thandi.

The Miss Malawi organization cited two reasons for this decision: Thandi's age, as she turned 27 before the competition, and her lack of enthusiasm for attending. They claimed that Thandi expressed more interest in other international pageants during an orientation meeting in January.

In contrast, Thandi stated she was open to attending Miss World after stepping back from Miss Supranational. The situation became more contentious when it was revealed that Ireen Navicha's mother, Mary Navicha, is a sitting Cabinet Minister in Malawi, raising questions about potential political influence in the selection process.

The Miss Malawi organization defended its choice, asserting that Ireen was a better fit for Miss World due to her advocacy work and experience, despite the age rule being applied inconsistently.
