Miva Pro-Chancellor Advocates Open Learning in Nigeria

Dr. Tunji Olowolaf, the Pro-Chancellor of Miva Open University, called for a fundamental rethinking of higher education delivery in Nigeria, advocating for open learning as a transformative model to expand access while maintaining academic rigor.

Speaking at the university's maiden convocation ceremony held recently in Lagos, Olowolaf emphasized that quality education should be accessible regardless of geographical, economic, or social barriers. He argued that the traditional educational structure must adapt to the realities of learners rather than forcing students to conform to outdated systems.

He recalled the vision of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose free education policies aimed to broaden learning opportunities. Olowolaf identified maintaining quality amid increasing enrollment as a significant challenge for higher education institutions globally.

He urged graduates to embrace lifelong learning and contribute meaningfully to national development, asserting that Nigeria's greatest challenges stem from a lack of organized, disciplined leadership rather than a shortage of resources.
