MMIA Implements New Safety Measures for Airside Operations

Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) has unveiled new safety measures aimed at strengthening airside safety and operational discipline following a stakeholder meeting. The airport safety committee has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards reckless driving and debris hazards, which are critical safety concerns at Nigeria's busiest airport.

The committee has proposed a reduction in the airside speed limit from 15 km/h to 10 km/h within the international terminal zone 1 and construction areas. This change is part of a broader strategy to rehabilitate the E-wing and D-wing, which will significantly reduce operational space.

Adequate signage will be installed immediately to enforce compliance with these new regulations. Additionally, a newly inaugurated airside task force will commence full operations to strictly monitor vehicles and personnel.

The committee has also emphasized the prohibition of alcohol consumption and reckless driving in the airside area, with regular alcohol tests mandated. The sale of sachet alcoholic drinks within the airport environment has been explicitly banned.
