Morocco, Ethiopia, South Africa, Botswana Bid for AFCON 2028

Morocco, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Botswana have formally submitted bids to host the AFCON 2028 tournament, as confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of the Thursday deadline. CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced this during the recent final of the Morocco-hosted competition.

The AFCON 2028 will mark a significant transition from the traditional biennial format to a four-year cycle, aimed at alleviating the increasing congestion in the international football calendar. Morocco, which will host the 2025 and 2026 tournaments, aims to leverage its recent positive reception to enhance its infrastructure and fan experience.

Ethiopia's bid carries historical significance, having hosted the inaugural tournament in 1957 and winning titles in 1962, 1968, and 1976. South Africa, which hosted in 1996 and 2013, seeks to return as a host alongside Botswana, which would be its first time hosting the event.

The 2027 tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, marking a pivotal moment for East African football.
