Oyo Police Deny Charges in Al-Amin Mohammed's Suicide Case

Al-Amin Mohammed, a 30-year-old polytechnic student from Kwara State, died by suicide after being remanded in custody over a dispute involving an N8,000 debt. The Oyo State Police Command, represented by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, denied that Al-Amin was prosecuted for the debt, asserting he faced charges of assault and malicious damage.

However, evidence obtained by Sunday PUNCH contradicts the police's claims. Al-Amin had borrowed N23,000 from Kazeem Mukaila's Point-of-Sale centre, repaying N15,000 but delaying the N8,000 balance.

Following a scuffle over his seized phone, he was detained by vigilantes and later taken to the Sanyo Police Division, where he was held. His family was reportedly asked for N100,000 bail and N70,000 for a damaged phone, which Al-Amin denied damaging.

After spending four days in custody, he was released but expressed feelings of humiliation in a voice note to his mother before ingesting a poisonous substance days later.
