NAFDAC Exposes Chinese Counterfeit Networks in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns about Chinese-led counterfeit networks operating within Nigeria, producing and distributing fake products. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, stated that these syndicates have shifted from importing counterfeit goods to establishing local production and distribution operations.

They identify popular products, send samples to China for replication, and distribute the fakes through logistics companies they control. NAFDAC has begun shutting down illegal logistics facilities linked to these networks.

The agency reported a significant rise in counterfeit consumer goods, including fake cosmetics and contaminated food products. Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC Director-General, announced that enforcement operations in Lagos and the South-East led to the seizure and destruction of counterfeit goods valued at over N1.5 trillion.

Additionally, NAFDAC secured 64 convictions against counterfeiters between June 2025 and June 2026, marking the highest number in its history. Some suspects arrested in Kano, Sokoto, Delta, and Anambra are currently facing prosecution.
