National Assembly Calls for Review of Accommodation Policy

The National Assembly has appealed to the federal government to reconsider its monetisation policy regarding official accommodation, which has led to substantial challenges for lawmakers and their legislative aides. Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk to the National Assembly, made this appeal during his closing remarks at a one-month training program for Legislative Aides in Abuja.

He noted that the accommodation difficulties, especially for aides living far from their principals, could hinder effective coordination and efficiency in their roles. Ogunlana recalled the previous arrangement where members were housed at the former Apo Quarters, which was disrupted by the monetisation policy.

He urged the government to review this policy to facilitate better accommodation for National Assembly members and their personnel. Additionally, Ogunlana addressed healthcare access issues, announcing the development of a new medical facility to alleviate pressure on the existing National Assembly Clinic, which was originally designed for lawmakers and staff.

He expressed optimism that the new facility would be operational by the following year.
