National Assembly Clerk Reveals 14,000 Workers Employed

On Tuesday, Kamoru Ogunlana, the Clerk to the National Assembly, stated that the National Assembly has more than 14,000 workers, excluding the 469 federal lawmakers and their visitors, making it the busiest parliament in the world. Ogunlana made this statement during the final phase of a capacity-building program for legislative aides in the 10th National Assembly.

He highlighted that the large workforce, along with the lawmakers and daily visitors, creates a demanding administrative environment. In the past three years, the Senate and House of Representatives have passed a total of 3,500 bills, with the Senate contributing 1,500 bills and the House 2,000.

Ogunlana called for a special salary structure for legislative aides, recognizing their importance in the legislative process. He urged the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) and the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to address issues regarding the salaries and conditions of service for these aides, emphasizing the need for reforms to improve their welfare and capacity to support lawmakers.
