National Assembly to Discuss 2027 Election Date Change

The National Assembly of Nigeria will reconvene for a plenary session on February 17, 2026, to discuss a potential shift in the date of the 2027 presidential election from February 20 to February 13, 2027. This consideration arises from concerns that the original date falls within the Ramadan fasting period, which could affect voter participation.

The notice for the session was issued by Kamoru Ogunlana, a member of the Senate. The extraordinary session aims to address the request from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adjust the election date, following discussions among stakeholders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who urged for a reconsideration to ensure inclusivity and national cohesion.

The Senate has recently approved amendments to the electoral act, including provisions for electronic transmission of results. The upcoming session is expected to significantly influence preparations for the 2027 general elections, particularly regarding the religious sensitivities and technological capabilities involved.
