Nigeria's Digital Economy Act 2026 Nears Presidential Approval

The National Digital Economy and e-Governance Act 2026, led by Shuaib Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, is expected to receive presidential assent within weeks following its passage through the first and second readings in the National Assembly. The bill aims to transform Nigeria's digital economy and e-governance framework, addressing legal uncertainties in electronic transactions and promoting a shift from paper-based systems to digital processes.

It mandates the digitization of government services across various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to reduce paperwork, combat corruption, and improve citizen access to public services. The bill also includes provisions for amendments in 2024 and 2025 to align with United Nations conventions against cybercrime.

The comprehensive 78-page document outlines a regulatory framework for the implementation of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, ensuring legal recognition of electronic signatures and transactions.
