NBC Warns Media Against Misinformation Ahead of 2027 Polls

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has cautioned broadcasters, online publishers, bloggers, and other media players against disseminating misinformation, hate speech, and inflammatory content as political campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections commenced on August 19, 2026. In a statement from Moses Jolayemi, Technical Adviser to the Director-General Charles Ebuebu, the NBC stressed the importance of accuracy, fairness, and professionalism in political coverage.

It warned against promoting or suppressing specific parties or candidates and emphasized the need for editorial verification of allegations involving corruption or misconduct. The NBC mandated that broadcasters must keep accurate records of political airtime and ensure equal opportunity in coverage.

It also prohibited the announcement of unofficial election results and reminded stations of the 24-hour campaign silence period before polling day. The Commission plans to intensify monitoring of political broadcasts, including advertisements and live programmes.
