NHRC Warns Against Hate Speech Before 2027 Elections

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a warning regarding the rise of hate speech, intimidation, and divisive political rhetoric that could lead to violence ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections. During a press conference on Thursday at the NHRC headquarters in Abuja, Executive Secretary Chief Tony Ojukwu stated that inflammatory remarks from political and public figures threaten human dignity and the democratic process.

He cited comments from Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir and Senator Francis Fadahunsi as having crossed a "red line for decency." Ojukwu clarified that the NHRC's intervention is not aimed at any specific political party or group but is a human-rights response to protect the dignity of all Nigerians. He stressed that freedom of expression carries responsibilities and warned against language that could incite violence or discrimination.

Ojukwu referenced the 1994 Rwandan genocide as a cautionary tale, urging early identification of dangerous narratives to prevent potential chaos and violence in Nigeria.
