NBM Calls for Child Safety Measures After Tragic Drowning

The NBM of Africa Worldwide has urged for stronger protective measures for schoolchildren against flood-related dangers after the tragic death of six-year-old Success Ezenwafor. Success was swept away when a school bus transporting him and other occupants overturned due to floodwater on Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South Local Government Area.

This incident occurred on a Tuesday, and while nine other occupants, including seven schoolchildren and two adults, were rescued and taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for treatment, Success remained missing until his body was recovered the following Wednesday. Dr Charles Chimezie, President of NBM, expressed condolences to Success’s family, UNIZIK Primary School, and the Anambra community, describing the incident as a “painful and heartbreaking loss.” He emphasized the need for improved flood-control measures, monitoring of flood-prone roads, and enforcement of safety standards for school transportation, particularly during heavy rainfall, to prevent similar tragedies.
