NCC and ALTON Launch Free Data Access for Education

On October 1, 2026, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), launched the Zero-Rated Data Access to Approved Educational Platforms and Content Initiative. This initiative allows eligible users to receive up to 100 megabytes of free daily data, facilitating access to designated educational platforms.
Over time, this translates to approximately 36.5GB of educational data annually for learners. Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NCC, stated that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a $1 trillion economy, emphasizing the importance of education and skills acquisition.
Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of ALTON, noted that the telecommunications industry has committed nearly N200 billion for the pilot phase, which involves 5,000 learners. The program aims to bridge disparities in educational resource access across Nigeria.
