NCC Remains Silent on E-Transmission Debate Amid Telecom Growth

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has chosen not to comment on the ongoing debate surrounding electronic transmission of election results, maintaining a cautious silence amid controversies. A senior official from the NCC, who spoke anonymously to Vanguard Agency, emphasized that the commission is not engaging in political debates.

Data indicates that Nigeria's telecommunications sector experienced notable improvements in 2021, largely due to increased private sector investments and government-backed initiatives aimed at optimizing networks and deploying base stations. MTN Nigeria reportedly committed ₦565.7 billion for fiber home expansion and rural connectivity by the first half of 2025, while Airtel Nigeria activated 2,300 new telecom sites in the first quarter of 2025.

By December 2025, broadband penetration is expected to surpass 50%, with 109.6 million subscribers. The federal government aims to achieve 80% national connectivity by 2027, with projects to expand fiber optic infrastructure from 35,000 kilometers to 125,000 kilometers.

However, industry players have raised concerns about infrastructure adequacy and regulatory challenges that hinder expansion.
