Lagos Faces Flood Risk, Warns NDC Candidate Ladipo Johnson

Ladipo Johnson, the National Democratic Congress candidate for Lagos Central Senatorial District, issued a warning regarding the rising flood risk in Lagos, stating that parts of the city could be submerged within the next two to three decades if urgent measures are not taken to address flooding, drainage blockages, and indiscriminate land reclamation. Speaking on Tuesday while unveiling his vision and legislative agenda, Johnson expressed concern over rising water levels in areas such as Lagos Island, Marina, and Lagoon, attributing the worsening situation to major engineering projects and poor environmental practices.

He criticized the lack of proper environmental impact surveys during construction projects like Ilubirin and highlighted the need for a holistic approach to address the drainage issues. Johnson also called for greater public awareness and behavioral change among residents to improve environmental practices.

Recent flooding in Lagos has disrupted movement and caused property damage in several areas, including Gbagada, Iyana Ipaja, and Ikorodu.
