NDC Critiques Tinubu's Absence at UNGA, Raises Concerns

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Nigeria's main opposition party, criticized President Bola Tinubu for his absence from the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, marking his third consecutive absence since assuming office in 2023. The NDC, in a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director, expressed concerns over Tinubu's prolonged absence from Nigeria, alleging it created a governance vacuum.

They questioned compliance with Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution, which requires the President to inform the Senate President and House Speaker when unable to perform duties. The party demanded disclosure of Tinubu's whereabouts and health status, arguing that Nigeria deserves a President who is present.

The Presidency stated that Vice President Kashim Shettima would lead Nigeria's delegation and deliver the national statement, asserting that Tinubu's absence would not affect Nigeria's diplomatic standing. The 81st UNGA General Debate occurred from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The NDC is preparing for the 2027 general elections with Peter Obi as its presidential candidate.
