NDPC Investigates Loan Sharks for Data Privacy Violations

The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is conducting an investigation into loan shark operators over allegations of privacy violations. Vincent Olatunji, the NDPC Commissioner, highlighted that these operators, often unregulated, access borrowers' phone contact lists and share images without consent, sending defamatory and threatening messages in attempts to recover loans.

This breach of customer data privacy is a significant concern, as many borrowers unknowingly expose their personal data due to a lack of understanding of loan agreements. Olatunji stressed the importance of public awareness regarding data privacy rights and urged Nigerians to carefully review loan agreements.

The NDPC is working alongside several consumer protection entities, including the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria, to ensure compliance with data protection laws. The investigation is ongoing, with the NDPC committed to adhering to due process and allowing organizations to defend themselves.
