Nepal Sets New Everest Climbing Record with 274 Summits

Nepal achieved a new record for the number of climbers summiting Mount Everest, with 274 successful ascents reported. This surpasses the previous record of 223 climbers on May 22, 2019.

Rishi Bhandari, Secretary General of the Expedition Operators Association of Nepal, confirmed this achievement on Thursday. The record was set on May 23, 2019, when 354 climbers reached the peak, according to Guinness World Records.

Bhandari noted that the number of climbers reaching the summit has increased, although specific figures for climbers from the Tibetan side remain unavailable. The climbing season typically runs from April to May, with approximately 100 climbers expected to head to Everest.

Himal Gautam, a tourism official, indicated that Nepal has issued 494 permits for Everest climbs this year, each costing $15,000. Concerns about safety due to overcrowding in the "death zone" have led to calls for tighter regulations and higher fees for expeditions.
