CDA Advocates for Parliamentary System in Nigeria

The Citizen Democrat Alliance (CDA), recently registered alongside seven other political parties in Nigeria, has unveiled an ambitious reform agenda advocating for a return to a parliamentary system of governance. The launch took place in Abuja, led by the national chairman, Tamunotony Samuel Inioribo.

The CDA argues that Nigeria's current challenges stem from a highly centralized government structure that concentrates power at the center, limiting the capacity of state and local communities to develop. The party's proposed reforms include replacing Nigeria's presidential system with a mixed parliamentary model that features a ceremonial presidential head of state and a prime minister as the head of government accountable to parliament.

The CDA also calls for the adoption of a mixed-member proportional representation electoral system to reduce winner-takes-all politics, encourage coalition-building, and ensure every vote counts. Additionally, the party supports comprehensive constitutional reform to allow federal units to develop according to their unique capacities and resources while preserving national unity and protecting minority rights.
