Adebayo Condemns Political Party Deregistration in Nigeria

Adewol Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), condemned the proposed deregistration of several political parties in Nigeria, including the African Democratic Congress and Accord Party. He described this move as unconstitutional and undemocratic, asserting that it undermines Nigeria's democratic development.

Adebayo's statement, made on June 12, coincided with Nigeria's Democracy Day celebrations, emphasizing the need for a commitment to democratic governance. He criticized the recent court judgment that ordered the deregistration of these parties, arguing that there is no constitutional, legal, or moral basis for suppressing political parties.

Although the SDP was not among those affected, Adebayo expressed solidarity with the affected parties and pledged legal support to challenge the deregistration orders. He also called for constitutional reforms to limit the powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the registration and deregistration of political parties, advocating for a system that allows political associations to freely field candidates.
