New Trial on Diego Maradona's Death Begins in Argentina

A new trial concerning the death of football legend Diego Maradona began in Argentina on Tuesday, following the collapse of the first trial due to judicial misconduct. Maradona, considered one of the greatest players in history, died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema after recovering from brain surgery.

Seven members of his medical team, including doctors, psychologists, and nurses, have been indicted for gross negligence. The trial will hear from 120 witnesses and aims to determine the medical team's responsibility for Maradona's death, with accusations of homicide and possible intent to cause death.

The previous trial was annulled in May 2025 due to the impeachment of Judge Julieta Makintach, who oversaw the case. The defense argues that Maradona's long-standing battles with cocaine and alcohol addiction were the natural causes of his death, dismissing claims of malicious intent.

The trial is expected to last until July.
