New Trial for Maradona's Doctor Opens Amid Negligence Claims

The trial of Leopoldo Luque, Diego Maradona's personal physician, commenced on a Thursday in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, as he faces accusations of gross negligence that allegedly contributed to the football legend's death at age 60 in November 2020. Luque, along with five other medical professionals, is being tried for their roles in Maradona's final days, which were marked by heart failure and acute pulmonary edema.

The prosecution, led by Patricio Ferrari, claims that the medical team acted with amateurism and failed to provide adequate care. Luque has expressed deep regret over Maradona's death, referring to him as an idol and friend.

The trial follows a previous one that was annulled, and it will explore whether Luque's decision to allow Maradona to recover at home endangered his life. Evidence presented includes WhatsApp messages suggesting Luque manipulated Maradona's daughter regarding care decisions.
