New Zealand Sets Work Hour Limits for Student Visa Holders

New Zealand has clarified the working hours permitted for foreign students on student visas, which depend on the type of course being studied. Most student visa holders can work part-time for up to 25 hours per week during the academic term.

Eligible students can work full-time during mid-year study breaks and the New Year holiday period. The ability to work is determined by the conditions on their eVisa or visa letter.

Students must be at least 16 years old for work conditions to apply. Full-time students in programs lasting at least two academic years or those leading to a qualification at Level 4 or above can work up to 25 hours weekly.

Students in approved exchange programs also qualify. Secondary school students in Years 12 and 13 may work part-time with written permission.

Doctoral or Research Masters students have no cap on working hours but must continue studying full-time. International students cannot be self-employed and must work under a formal employment agreement.
