Nextier Discourse Highlights Nigerian Women's Struggles

The Nextier Discourse session, hosted by Patrick O. Okigbo III, focused on the struggles of Nigerian women against structural constraints.

Acclaimed author Chika Unigwe showcased her literary work, including her novel "Grace," to illustrate the socio-economic challenges faced by women, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unigwe argued that fiction can reveal the human consequences of systemic failures and highlighted the persistent cultural pressures that restrict women's choices.

She noted that despite policy reforms and increased visibility of women in leadership, cultural attitudes remain largely unchanged. Unigwe emphasized that structural reforms alone cannot deliver meaningful progress without a corresponding shift in societal mindsets.

She cited the example of young women whose ambitions are curtailed by entrenched beliefs prioritizing marriage over education. The discussion also addressed the role of women in negotiating within restrictive systems for survival rather than exercising full autonomy, underscoring the need for urgent systemic reforms to address these issues.
