NFF Calls Emergency Congress Amid Resignations and Probe

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has summoned an emergency congress to be held in Abuja, the capital, due to the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau and several Executive Committee members. This development follows Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons' exit from the 2027 Women’s World Cup play-offs.

The NFF board is under investigation by security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS), regarding the management of a 17 billion naira federal government intervention fund intended for players' wages and bonuses. This fund was approved by President Bola Tinubu in 2024 to address outstanding payments owed to Nigeria’s national teams.

A source indicated that the DSS is reviewing documents related to the fund's utilization, dismissing claims of witch-hunting. Under pressure, eight of the 13 members of the NFF board have reportedly resigned.
