NGX Market Wrap 25-May-2026 | Plus234Feed
The Nigerian Exchange closed at 251,131.51 points on Monday with mixed sentiment, as telecommunications and select small-cap stocks surged while commodity and discretionary plays declined sharply. Trading activity remained robust with ₦31.6 billion in value transacted across nearly 500 million shares.
The NGX delivered a mixed close on 25 May 2026, with broad-based gains in select sectors offset by significant losses in others, leaving the composite index relatively balanced.
Telecommunications emerged as the session's standout performer. AIRTELAFRI led gainers with a commanding +10.00% rally, adding ₦332.30 to close at ₦3,655.70, signalling renewed investor confidence in the sector heavyweight. This strong showing in a major-cap stock provided crucial support to market sentiment.
Small-cap momentum was equally noteworthy. TANTALIZER (+9.93%, +₦0.41), SOVRENINS (+9.65%, +₦0.22), CAVERTON (+9.63%, +₦0.65), and UNIONDICON (+9.45%, +₦2.05) all posted double-digit percentage gains, indicating a rotation toward undervalued plays or position-building ahead of anticipated corporate announcements.
However, weakness in consumer discretionary and commodity-linked stocks tempered overall gains. ZICHIS and TIP both plummeted approximately 10%, losing ₦3.36 and ₦3.35 respectively, while FTNCOCOA declined 9.80% on soft demand. RTBRISCOE and LEARNAFRCA also retreated, suggesting caution among investors in these segments.
Volume leadership reflected institutional participation: ACCESSCORP dominated with 54.2 million shares traded, followed by FIDELITYBK and ZENITHBANK, underscoring sustained demand for banking fundamentals. At ₦31.6 billion in daily value, trading remained healthy.
Investors should monitor whether AIRTELAFRI's momentum sustains into the next session, as telecoms strength often signals broader market confidence.
