NGX Market Wrap 28 July 2026 | Plus234Feed
The Nigerian Exchange closed at 247,865.48 points on Tuesday with mixed sentiment, as insurance stocks rallied sharply while transport and financial services names faced selling pressure. Total market value reached ₦33.06 billion across 629.7 million shares traded.
The NGX delivered a tale of two markets on Tuesday, with clear sectoral divergence driving price action across 53,342 deals.
Insurance stocks dominated gainers, with LASACO leading the charge at +10.00% (₦0.20 to ₦2.20), followed by LINKASSURE (+9.93%, +₦0.15), TRANSEXPR (+9.93%, +₦0.28), SUNUASSUR (+9.88%, +₦0.32), and CMFC (+9.86%, +₦0.34). This broad-based rally in the insurance sector suggests concentrated buying interest, though without disclosed catalysts, traders should exercise caution on sustainability.
Conversely, financial services and transport stocks faced headwinds. MEYER slumped 9.97% (₦1.85 decline to ₦16.70), while MECURE dropped 9.94% (₦6.20 to ₦56.20)—the day's most severe loss in absolute terms. ABCTRANS fell 9.93% (₦0.70), and CILEASING declined 8.66% (₦0.55), suggesting sector-wide profit-taking or shift in investor appetite away from these plays.
Liquidity concentrated in blue chips: ACCESSCORP dominated volume at 85.16 million shares, with FCMB (67.22 million) and CHAMS (27.90 million) following. This top-heavy trading pattern, typical of less volatile sessions, indicates retail and institutional consolidation around market leaders rather than risk appetite.
Market capitalization stood steady at ₦159.92 trillion, reflecting the balanced nature of gains and losses.
Watch for volume shifts in financial services on the next session to determine if selling was tactical or structural.
