NHRC Demands Arrest of Kuje Chairman for Threatening Residents

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded the arrest and prosecution of Hon. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, for allegedly instructing residents to leave if they do not support the All Progressives Congress (APC). NHRC Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu, SAN, characterized Shekwolo's remarks as an unconstitutional assault on citizens' fundamental rights and a threat to democratic participation, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.

In a viral video, Shekwolo stated that opposition to the APC would not be tolerated. Ojukwu referenced Sections 40, 41, and 42 of the 1999 Constitution, which protect freedoms of association, movement, and protection from discrimination.

He warned that such rhetoric could lead to violence and urged the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, and INEC to investigate and protect residents from political intimidation. The NHRC also rejected the use of government projects to secure political loyalty, emphasizing that Shekwolo must serve all residents without discrimination.
