NHRC Demands Arrest of Sheikh Jingir for Hate Speech

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, a prominent Islamic cleric, due to his alleged hate speech that could exacerbate religious tensions in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. Chief Tony Ojukwu, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, made this demand after reviewing a viral video in which Jingir urged his followers to engage in religiously exclusive politics and to obtain their permanent voter cards (PVCs).

Ojukwu condemned Jingir's use of the term "infidels" to refer to people of other faiths, stating that such remarks constitute hate speech and incitement to religious hatred, which could lead to violence during a politically sensitive period. He emphasized the need for equal application of the law, regardless of Jingir's status or political affiliation, to deter similar provocations from other influential figures.

The NHRC urged relevant authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, to take action against Jingir.
