Nigeria, Ghana Onion Trade Resumes After Dispute Resolution

The cross-border onion trade between Nigeria and Ghana has resumed after a dispute that led to the suspension of shipments. The West Central Africa Onion Observatory confirmed that outstanding issues affecting trade have been resolved through sustained dialogue and intervention by relevant authorities.

Aliyu Maitasamu, the president of the regional body, announced that normal operations would resume immediately, with trucks authorized to convey onions between the two countries. The disruption had significantly impacted the commercial industry, with sources estimating daily losses running into billions of naira due to halted exports.

Ghana heavily relies on Nigerian onions, and the trade disruption affected supply chains beyond Ghana, impacting countries like Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. Measures have been put in place to prevent future disruptions, and traders are urged to comply with existing trade regulations and safety procedures.

The resumption of trade is seen as a major relief for traders, helping to stabilize supply prices across the sub-region.
