NEPC and Onion Producers Formalize Cross-Border Trade

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and the National Onion Producers and Processors Association of Nigeria (NOPPAN) have initiated a collaborative effort to formalize cross-border onion trade with Ghana. This initiative was launched during a sensitization program held in Sokoto, aimed at integrating Nigerian traders into the formal export system.

NEPC's state coordinator, Abelo Umar, emphasized the importance of proper documentation for exports to capture foreign exchange earnings and prevent future trade disputes. He noted that many traders operate without formal documentation, exposing them to risks.

Alhaji Aliyu Maitasamu, president of NOPPAN, highlighted the necessity for compliance with export regulations and outlined steps for traders, including registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission and obtaining phytosanitary clearance. The collaboration aims to resolve ongoing disputes with Ghanaian authorities and establish a transparent trade system, ensuring that no onion leaves Nigeria without proper documentation.

This initiative is part of Nigeria's broader strategy to diversify its economy beyond oil exports.
