Nigeria Launches Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiative

Nigeria has inaugurated a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) program to advance the decarbonization of its aviation sector. The launch event took place in Abuja on a Monday and was organized by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union (EU).

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, described the event as a significant milestone in Nigeria's journey toward building a resilient and competitive sustainable aviation sector. He emphasized that aviation is a vital catalyst for economic growth, trade, and tourism, contributing meaningfully to global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The newly established high-level steering committee will provide strategic direction and strengthen inter-agency coordination for the implementation of Nigeria's sustainable aviation fuel program. Captain Chijioke Onochie Najomo, Director General of NCAA, noted that the feasibility studies supported by ICAO and technical assistance from EASA would help transform Nigeria's abundant feedstock resources into commercially viable sustainable aviation fuel products.
