Obi Condemns Renewed Attacks in Nigeria's North-Central States

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, issued a statement on his X handle on Sunday, condemning the recent surge of attacks in villages and towns across Nigeria, particularly in Benue, Plateau, and Niger States. He highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action from authorities to safeguard communities and ensure the safety of citizens' lives and property.

Obi reported that in Mangu, Plateau State, at least 23 people were officially confirmed dead in the Jwak Maitumbi attack, while local residents estimated the death toll to be above 30, with more than 45 houses destroyed. In Borgu, Niger State, over 40 people were reportedly killed, and more than 100 were abducted, although these figures are contested.

Obi expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Benue, where communities face repeated killings, abductions, and destruction of homes. He warned that the violence should not be viewed as isolated incidents, stating, “Nigeria is not officially at war, yet citizens are being attacked in their villages.”.
