Abuja Experiences Mild Earth Tremor on August 4, 2026

On August 4, 2026, an earth tremor occurred in Abuja, prompting Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, to direct the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to provide regular updates on the situation. Residents reported experiencing a mild tremor, which raised concerns on social media.

Dr. Alake reassured the public that the tremor posed no serious threat to lives or properties. The NGSA confirmed that the tremor was a “light event of I to II magnitude on the Mercalli scale,” originating from a depth of one kilometer and affecting an area of four kilometers within five seconds.

Experts, including Prof. Nghargbu K’tso from Nasarawa State University, attributed the tremor to increased quarry and illegal mining activities, as well as indiscriminate drilling of boreholes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He called for government action to curb these activities, which have led to frequent disturbances in residential areas like Kubwa.
