Nigeria Leads UN Peacekeeping Committee for Accountability

On September 11, Nigeria assumed the chairmanship of the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, C-34, with Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim leading the initiative. He succeeded Canadian Ambassador David Lametti.

Ibrahim committed to advocating for a more effective, accountable, and field-oriented approach to international peacekeeping, addressing the disconnect between UN policy decisions and the realities faced by peacekeepers and civilians in conflict zones. He emphasized the need for peacekeeping policies to reflect the experiences of personnel and communities on the ground.

During his tenure, Nigeria will focus on promoting accountability, effective multilateralism, and a stronger relationship between financial resources and policy outcomes. Ibrahim also called for increased involvement of senior military leadership in committee discussions, particularly during the substantive session scheduled for February to March 2027.

Nigeria's extensive experience in peacekeeping positions it to influence discussions on the future of UN missions, particularly in complex security environments.
