Nigeria Assumes Chairmanship of African Telecom Union

Nigeria has taken over the chairmanship of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) following a two-day conference where significant resolutions were made. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, emphasized the need for collaboration among member states to enhance digital infrastructure and governance.

Kezias Kazuba Mwale from Zambia was elected as the next secretary-general of the ATU after four rounds of voting, securing 21 out of 34 votes in the final round. He will begin his four-year term on January 1, 2027.

The conference also adopted the 2026 Abuja Declaration, which commits member states to improving broadband access, consumer protection, cybersecurity, and addressing digital inclusion, particularly for marginalized groups. Additionally, 25 member states were elected to the ATU Administrative Council for the next four years.

The outgoing secretary-general, John Omo, noted that the conference provided a renewed mandate for the union to implement its strategic priorities.
