Nigeria to Host Historic Global AMR Conference in 2026

Nigeria is set to host the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) from December 6-8, 2026, at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja. This marks the first time the conference will be held on African soil.
The theme for the conference is “One Health. Advancing Global AMR Commitments through Local Action.” It will gather ministers and stakeholders from over 100 countries to review progress and develop solutions to combat AMR, which is linked to approximately 1.3 million deaths annually worldwide.
Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, described AMR as a “silent pandemic” requiring a combined approach across human health, animal health, agriculture, and the environment. The conference aims to adopt the Abuja Compact on AMR and will involve collaboration among four ministries: Health and Social Welfare, Agriculture and Food Security, Livestock Development, and Environment.
Malam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, the Minister of Environment, emphasized the need for a joint One Health coordination mechanism to address AMR effectively.
