Nigerian Defence Headquarters X Account Hacked, Raises Concerns

The official X account of the Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ), @DHQNigeria, was reportedly hacked by unknown individuals who posted cryptocurrency-related content. This account, which has approximately 982,000 followers, is primarily used by the military for official statements, operational updates, and security information.

The unauthorized posts raised concerns that scammers or other unauthorized actors had gained access to the account. Reactions on social media included calls for swift action from military authorities, with former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad urging the Defense Intelligence Agency to recover the account immediately.

Cybersecurity commentator Maryam Shuiabu Aliyu emphasized that the incident poses a significant trust and national security concern, questioning the response time of authorities to such breaches. Other users expressed worries about the implications for Nigeria’s digital security infrastructure, with some questioning the appropriateness of discussing the breach publicly before the account was secured.
