Nigerian Army Implements Mission Command Strategy

The Nigerian Army has implemented a new strategy known as mission command to improve its military operations in response to insurgency, terrorism, and other security threats. This strategy provides commanders with clear objectives while granting them increased autonomy to make decisions based on real-time situations.

The approach is central to a new book that examines the leadership style of Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu and the transformations occurring within the Nigerian Army under his command. The book was unveiled in Abuja, where the authors called for enhanced focus on military doctrine and leadership.

Lead author Dr. AK Etta Peters stated that the publication aims to preserve lessons from current military operations for future generations. The authors noted that the mission command strategy has led to improvements in troop morale, operational speed, and relations with civilians in conflict areas.

They emphasized that military strength alone is insufficient to address Nigeria's security challenges, advocating for clear doctrines to guide military operations beyond individual commanders' tenures.
