Nigeria Launches Consultations for National Policing Bill

The Nigerian Government has commenced nationwide consultations regarding the proposed National Policing Bill to establish a comprehensive legal and operational framework for state policing. Citizens, professional bodies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders are invited to submit memoranda and policy proposals over a two-week period.

The Working Group, chaired by Rt. Hon.

Femi Gbajabiamila, is also reviewing the Police Act 2020 and related laws to develop a modern policing system. The consultations will culminate in a draft bill, scheduled for presentation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on September 3, 2026.

The Working Group has outlined a seven-week work program from July 27 to September 14, 2026, ensuring that the drafting process is thorough. The proposed legislation aims to establish a clear legal framework for federal and state policing, incorporating various elements such as independent oversight and human rights safeguards.
