Public Submissions on National Policing Bill Close Today

The Presidency has declared that public submissions regarding the proposed National Policing Bill will close at 5pm on August 13, 2026. This announcement was made by Femi Gbajabiamila, the chief of staff to President Bola Tinubu and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill.

Gbajabiamila called on Nigerians to express their views on the establishment of state police, aiming to incorporate their experiences and expertise into the legislation. He highlighted the importance of addressing concerns related to political interference, police misconduct, and the need for effective intelligence-sharing between federal and state police.

Gbajabiamila warned against the potential misuse of state police by governors against political opponents and stressed the necessity for robust safeguards in the proposed system. He affirmed that the public consultation would not infringe upon the National Assembly's constitutional powers to scrutinize the Bill.

The reform aims to create a policing system that is both locally responsive and adherent to national standards.
