Nigerian Navy Hosts 2026 Sea Power Symposium on Security

The Nigerian Navy hosted the 2026 Sea Power Symposium at the Eko Convention Centre in Victoria Island, coinciding with its 70th anniversary. The symposium, declared open by Minister of State for Defence Bello Muhammed Matawal, aimed to address maritime security challenges and enhance regional cooperation among African nations.

Matawal emphasized the importance of leveraging emerging technologies to combat maritime crime and highlighted the significance of collaboration among African navies to foster resilient partnerships. The theme of the symposium focused on utilizing technology to enhance maritime security in Africa, aligning with the Africa Integrated Maritime Strategy 2050.

The event served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss best practices and the role of naval forces in safeguarding international trade routes, which constitute approximately 90% of global trade volume. Vice Admiral Idi Abba, Chief of Naval Staff, was commended for his leadership in securing African waters and urged participation in international forums to deepen cooperation.
