Nigerians Must Pay Taxes for Government Accountability

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has stated that Nigerians must pay taxes to hold the government accountable. During a civic talk in Abuja, Mr.

Abiodun Olayeni Ali stressed that citizens who do not contribute to government revenue through taxes lack the moral and legal standing to demand answers from public officials. He noted that many Nigerians, particularly civil servants, do not pay taxes, which complicates discussions about accountability.

The NOA has initiated a nationwide sensitization campaign to educate citizens about new tax reforms and correct widespread misinformation. Mr.

Iniobong Usen discussed the structural weaknesses of Nigeria's fiscal system, explaining that the new personal income tax structure aims to alleviate the burden on low and middle-income earners while increasing contributions from higher-income individuals. The reforms also seek to simplify taxation for small businesses and eliminate multiple taxation.

The agency's ongoing public engagement campaign is part of a broader effort to rebuild trust between citizens and the government.
