NOA Urges Nigerians to Pay Taxes for Government Accountability

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) emphasized the necessity for Nigerians to fulfill their tax obligations to legitimately question government actions regarding public fund utilization. Olayeni Ali, a representative of the NOA, made these remarks during an interactive session in Abuja.

She noted that many Nigerians do not pay taxes, which undermines their moral and legal grounds to demand accountability from public officials. The agency has initiated a nationwide sensitization campaign to educate citizens about new tax reforms and counter misinformation.

Iniobong Usen, a senior program officer, explained that the new tax structure aims to alleviate the burden on low and middle-income earners while increasing contributions from higher-income individuals. The reforms include a presumptive tax system to simplify taxation for informal sector operators.

Toyin Olufon highlighted that companies with annual turnover below N100 million and net assets below N250 million would be exempt from income tax. The campaign aims to rebuild trust between citizens and the government regarding fiscal policies.
