NCC Reports 47% Surge in Nigeria's Data Consumption

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported that Nigeria's data consumption increased by nearly 47% year-on-year, reaching 1.66 million terabytes in July 2026, up from 1.13 million terabytes in July 2025. Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NCC, announced this during the inaugural Nigeria Digital Connectivity Investment Forum in Abuja.

He highlighted the growing demand for reliable digital connectivity and the necessity for sustained investment to enhance telecommunications networks and service quality. Maida noted that the increasing reliance on cloud services and artificial intelligence would further heighten the need for dependable connectivity.

He mentioned the 2025 tariff adjustment aimed at alleviating financial pressures on operators, which is expected to improve service delivery. Additionally, he pointed out President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's designation of telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure to bolster protection for telecom assets.

The NCC is also addressing Right of Way issues with state governments to facilitate network deployment.
