Shettima Praises Journalists' Role in Nigeria's Democracy

On September 24, 2026, Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, addressed the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference organized by the Nigeria Guild of Editors at the International Conference Center in Enugu. He stated that Nigeria's democratic journey owes much to journalists and editors who have advocated for public knowledge, often at personal risk.

Shettima underscored the media's role as the fourth estate, essential for interrogating power, informing citizens, and shaping public debate. He urged editors to continue reporting on Nigeria's progress, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration has made difficult choices leading to economic growth of 4.43% in Q2 2026, compared to 4.23% in Q2 2025, with improvements in agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services.

Shettima acknowledged the need for macroeconomic stability to translate into better living conditions for Nigerians and commended the Nigerian Guild of Editors for their contributions to democracy.
