Atiku Abubakar Warns of Kidney Sales Among Youths

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), raised alarms regarding reports of young Nigerians allegedly selling their kidneys to survive the escalating cost of living in Nigeria. In a post on X on Friday, he noted that some individuals are reportedly selling their kidneys for as little as ₦1.7 million, highlighting the dire economic conditions faced by the youth.

Atiku criticized the situation, stating that young Nigerians should focus on utilizing their talents and innovations rather than resorting to selling body organs. He linked this alarming trend to the rising costs of essential goods and services, including food, transportation, rent, school fees, medicine, and electricity.

Atiku pointed out that while Nigeria has laws against commercial organ sales and trafficking, these laws alone cannot address the underlying economic issues that make vulnerable individuals susceptible to exploitation. He called for economic policies that genuinely improve the daily lives of Nigerians, particularly the youth.
