Legal Scholar Prof. Alfred Kasunmu Dies at 92

Prof. Alfred Bandele Kasunmu (SAN), a prominent legal scholar and former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, died peacefully at the age of 92 on August 9, 2026.

His family announced his passing, describing him as a beloved father and grandfather. Born on May 23, 1934, in Lagos, Kasunmu was educated at Elizabeth Fowler Memorial School, Reagan Memorial Baptist School, and Baptist Academy, before obtaining his Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws degrees from University College London.

He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1964 and began his academic career at the University of Ife. In 1971, he joined the University of Lagos, serving as Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1973 to 1975.

He was appointed Attorney-General of Lagos State in 1975 and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria on January 25, 1978. Kasunmu was a prolific author and legal practitioner, representing various clients in Nigeria and abroad.

Former Attorney General Chief Bayo Ojo (SAN) praised him as a remarkable scholar whose influence extended beyond academia.
