Former Supreme Court Justice Umaru Atu Kalgo Passes Away

Retired Supreme Court Justice Umaru Atu Kalgo has died, leading Senator Aminu Tambuwal, who represents Sokoto South and previously served as Governor, to mourn his passing. On Tuesday, August 25, Tambuwal shared his tribute via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, describing Kalgo as one of Nigeria's most distinguished jurists and a recipient of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Kalgo's legal career began when he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1965, subsequently serving as state counsel, Deputy Solicitor-General, High Court Judge, and Chief Judge of Sokoto state. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 1988 and appointed to the Supreme Court in 1998, serving until his retirement in 2007.

Tambuwal noted Kalgo's meaningful contributions to Nigerian jurisprudence across various legal domains and his role in shaping the country's legal framework through committees he served on. He extended condolences to Kalgo's family and prayed for divine strength for his loved ones.
